Sir was one of the last residents of the shelter’s previous location, and his journey took a positive turn when he was welcomed by one of DACC’s dedicated transfer rescue partners. Thanks to their efforts, Sir was quickly adopted into a loving home. At this event, you’ll meet incredible dogs of all sizes and personalities who are looking for a second chance at love and family. Behavior evaluations provide a clearer understanding of a dog’s personality and suitability for your home. Behavior evaluations consider the dog’s personality, likes and dislikes, activity level and energy, and training potential. At Detroit Animal Care and Control, the behavior evaluation process isn’t about passing or failing. Instead, it’s about building a comprehensive profile of each dog’s personality, preferences, and needs.

Volunteer orientation is required for all in-shelter volunteering, including walking dogs, caring for cats, or assisting with on-site events. Our Furever Homes Adoption Festival is BACK on Saturday, September 13th — and we’re pulling out all the stops! Come down to Detroit Animal Care & Control (DACC) any day of the week, and you’ll witness our dedicated volunteers in action. From walking dogs and socializing cats to handling laundry and dishes, our volunteers are an essential part of #TeamDACC. During the first 3 weeks, your pet might start to show more of their personality. They could become more comfortable, but some challenges might arise, such as testing boundaries or exhibiting signs of anxiety.

The There are two different pathways for adopting a DACC animal, depending on whether the animal is in foster or at the shelter. The best way to help homeless pets is to make sure they never become homeless in the first place. By following a few simple guidelines, we can significantly reduce the number of pets in shelters and ensure that every pet has a loving home. You can help spread awareness about responsible pet ownership within your circle. Encourage friends and family to adopt, spay/neuter, secure, and properly identify their pets.

Specialized Care

While it’s natural to wonder, visually identifying a dog’s breed can be highly unreliable. Many dogs, especially those in shelters, are mixed breeds with diverse genetic backgrounds. We don’t post the breeds of our adoptable dogs here, because unless we know a dog’s parent history, visual identification is often misleading.

Donations

The bus also serves as a rescue shuttle, moving shelter animals to partner organizations and delivering free pet food to community distribution events. Sake (formerly known as “Island” in the shelter) – Picked up as a stray in Detroit, estimated 1 year old at the time, unfixed, not microchipped, and no one claimed her. She immediately caught the eye of professional dog trainer Abbie Volpone, one of FoDACC’s training partners, and came home with her in February of 2022. Her DNA test came back as German Shepherd, Husky, And Chow Chow.

She knows many tricks and behaviors, loves going paddleboarding and hiking, and she holds multiple AKC titles, including her Canine Good Citizen certification.
FoDACC is active in the areas of volunteer management, fundraising, donations, community outreach, foster programs, adoptions, in-shelter enrichment, and medical care for the animals.

The budget allocated to DACC by the City of Detroit often falls short of what is needed to operate a fully functional shelter and sustain lifesaving programs. You will receive support from our volunteer foster team and a community of other foster families. Veterinary costs are covered by FoDACC as long as care is delivered by our vets. The Detroit Lions are making history and the adoptable dogs in the Detroit city shelter are ALL about it! These Detroit shelter dogs love big cats and are ready to be your new playoff-watching buddy. That’s why between January 15 and February 6, Friends of Detroit Animal Care replacement value of assets and Control is hosting the Detroit Playoff Pups Promotion of a Lifetime. Sir, a resilient and lovable dog, is a cherished success story with Friends of DACC. He arrived at the shelter under tough circumstances, having been hit by a car and requiring multiple surgeries—including entropion surgery to ease his vision and comfort. Despite the challenges, Sir’s affectionate nature made him an instant volunteer favorite.

Focus on building the trust you have already established, and strengthening the bond between you and your pet. Provide regular exercise, mental stimulation, and lots of love and praise. Continue to monitor your pet’s interactions with other household pets and family members to ensure harmonious relationships. Remember, every pet is unique, and the rule provides a flexible guideline to ensure a successful transition for your new companion. Cats take about twice as long as dogs to adjust to their new home. Our foster programs offer temporary homes, opening up shelter space and providing individual care that some animals need until their find their forever families. Additionally, through our transfer and transport initiatives, we facilitate the movement of animals to partner shelters and rescues, broadening their chances of finding forever homes.

In cases of lost pets, we work diligently to reunite them with their families swiftly, ensuring that the joy of being together is never lost. Friends of DACC will transport your pet to and from their surgery with the BISSELL Pet Foundation in Grand Rapids. Pet parents will drop their pet off and pick their pet up from us at Detroit Animal Care and Control (1431 E. Ferry, Detroit) on the date of their surgery. Join the dogs of Detroit Animal Care and Control on Thursday, July 10 and Sunday, July 13 for an unforgettable experience where young storytellers become photographers. The Friends of Detroit Animal Care and Control’s Bark Bus transports animals to medical and rescue opportunities. We work hand in hand with Detroit Animal Care & Control (DACC) to help the homeless animals at DACC and proactively keep animals out of our shelter in the first place.

Provide a calm and quiet environment, let them sleep uninterrupted in their own designated sleeping spot, and establish a consistent routine for feeding and potty breaks. Keep them separate from any other pets, and limit introductions to only household members. Giving your pet time to feel secure in their new space will put them on the right path.
